Instructional Design is the art of determining the cause of problems that negatively impact businesses and thoughtfully creating solutions to those problems by addressing employee gaps. It is done intentionally, skillfully, and most importantly, actionably. The goal is to fix the problem through adequate opportunities to learn. Equitable learning ensures the best results for all involved.
Instructional designers (IDs) use various models to create learning solutions, with each development opportunity being unique. I typically follow the ADDIE model to ensure a structured and effective process.
This begins with collaborating closely with stakeholders to identify needs, address knowledge or skill gaps, and understand the target audience. I use this information to conduct a comprehensive training needs analysis. Once stakeholder alignment is achieved, I proceed with the course design phase.
At this stage, I map learning objectives to appropriate evaluation methods, draft an outline of the learning intervention, and develop storyboards. I also ensure that a clear communication strategy is in place to facilitate ongoing collaboration.
Upon stakeholder approval, the development phase begins. This includes creating and validating evaluation methods, producing deliverables, and holding regular check-in meetings to maintain open communication. After development, interventions are tested and presented to stakeholders for final approval.
During implementation, user feedback is closely monitored, and data from assessments and surveys is gathered. Evaluation results are then analyzed to identify both successes and areas for improvement. Opportunities for refinement are drafted for integration into the next iteration of the course.
